What We’re Reading Now:
Beginning October 1, 2026, join us for a slow read of the original Gothic novel, The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Ward Radcliffe.

First published in 1794 in four volumes, this dramatic tale of adventure, danger, tribulation and the supernatural was one of the most popular novels of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. When Austen’s characters (or the moralists she read in her youth) talk of popular novels, Udolpho is the archetype. It is beloved by Catherine Morland, the protagonist of Austen’s Northanger Abbey, and indeed Northanger itself is a ruthless and often hilarious satire of the Gothic genre.
We look forward to sharing insights and engaging discussions as we journey through this classic together. don’t miss out on this opportunity to connect with fellow book lovers!
